How Do I Create a Web Site?
In a sense, you will never be "finished" creating your website, because you should always be striving to make it better, faster, and easier to use. But in getting a new website off the ground, there are a few basic steps you'll need to take.
Domain Name
Your domain name is how people will refer to your website and find it on the Internet - for example, "mysite.com." For businesses, your domain name should incorporate your company's name and/or the services you provide, so that people can find your website easily. If the domain name you'd like isn't available with a ".com" or ".net" address, remember that there are other options, such ".biz" and ".tv." With the number of websites growing every day, finding the right domain name is not always easy, but since your website is your storefront in the virtual world, it's important to get it right. Web Hosting
There are numerous ways to host your website, and choosing the right type of web host depends on what your gorals for your website are. Are you building a site to host a movie blog or are you building a site to sell thousands of different products? In the first case, a free, advertising-supported web host may fit your needs perfectly, but that certainly wouldn't create the right image for a high-profile e-commerce site. Web Design
There are many different ways to design a website, from do-it-yourself templates to hiring the services of a professional web designer. In the end, though, the important thing is that your visitors can get to your content quickly and easily. So keep the following suggestions in mind:
- Your website should load quickly, even for users with a dial-up connection. If visitors have to wait too long, they may give up on your site and move on to the next one.
- Your web pages should be easy to read - too many font, bright colors and whirring animations just get in the way.
- Your website should be easy to navigate. Organize your site logically, so that nothing is more than a few clicks away from the home page.
- If you're trying to sell something, make it simple. A button under each item that says "add to shopping cart" is one easy solution.
